Two protected cruisers of the Suma-class were built in Japan at the Yokosuka shipyard at the end of the 19th century. The construction of these vessels was part of a broader programme aimed at developing Japan’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities.

The construction of the first vessel took as long as four years and was beset by various difficulties, illustrating how challenging it was to build such a ship domestically at the time. However, the experience gained during her construction allowed her sister ship Akashi to be built much faster and more efficiently, as well as enabling the construction of later, significantly larger vessels.

Our model represents both ships as a single class (the differences between them were minor).

Suma displaced around 2,700 tons (making her a 3rd-rate vessel), measured just over 93 metres in length, and could reach a speed of 20 knots.

Her main armament consisted of two 152 mm guns, six 120 mm guns, several smaller guns, and two torpedo tubes.

Both ships of this class took part in numerous engagements during the Russo-Japanese War. Suma participated in the sinking of the famous ship Kamchatka during the Battle of Tsushima.

A respectable speed, solid artillery armament for her class, and torpedoes make these vessels very useful ships for the Japanese fleet.
