The Pennsylvania-class armoured cruisers were ordered in 1900 as part of the expansion of the US Navy following its victory in the war with Spain in 1898. With the construction of additional battleships, there arose a need to reinforce them with new armoured cruisers that would be as powerful as the contemporary designs being built.
The six vessels of the Pennsylvania class were indeed formidable ships, displacing nearly 14,000 tons and measuring over 153 metres in length. They could reach a respectable speed of 22 knots, had excellent armour for their class, and were heavily armed with four 203 mm (8-inch) guns, fourteen 152 mm (6-inch) guns, numerous light guns, and torpedoes.
At the time of their commissioning, they were among the largest armoured cruisers in the world. These were certainly ships that, within their class, could destroy any opponent and, under favourable conditions, endure prolonged fire from older battleships while even inflicting significant damage upon them.
Their armament, speed, and armour will make them a highly valuable addition to the US Navy.
