The USS Petrel gunboat was ordered and built in the late 1880s with the task of performing auxiliary roles in relation to the main fleet, such as displaying the flag, operating in distant, secondary maritime areas, combating poaching, or engaging with poorly equipped local forces in colonized territories.

This small vessel displaced over 860 tons and measured 57 meters in length. Its machinery allowed it to reach a speed of 11 knots—sufficient for the tasks it was assigned. The Petrel was relatively well-armed, with a main armament of 4 guns of 152 mm (6 inches), complemented by two 3-pounders (47 mm) and one 1-pounder (37 mm) made by Hotchkiss.

The most significant event in the ship’s history was the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898, where the Petrel was part of Commodore George Dewey's squadron. Later, the Petrel even participated in actions during World War I as an auxiliary vessel hunting German submarines.

This gunboat, due to its relatively strong armament for its class, is well-suited for secondary roles in battle, such as controlling areas, scoring points in skirmishes, capturing islands, or repelling attacks from smaller units like torpedo boats or destroyers, against which it is extremely dangerous. It is also essential for recreating the historical Battle of Manila Bay in 1898.
