The Yorktown-class gunboats (also known as small cruisers) were ordered and built in the second half of the 1880s to support the American presence in the Pacific. They were named after famous battles of the American War of Independence. These vessels measured about 74 meters in length and displaced just over 1,700 tons. Their steam-powered propulsion allowed them to reach a speed of 16 knots (although during trials, they were capable of even faster speeds). For their size, they were relatively heavily armed, with six 152 mm (6-inch) guns, complemented by a set of smaller calibre guns, including two 6-pounders (57 mm), two 3-pounders (47 mm), and two 1-pounders (37 mm) made by Hotchkiss.

Throughout their service, the Yorktown-class ships operated primarily in the Pacific, patrolling the coasts of North and South America, as well as Hawaii. They participated in many conflicts involving the United States, including the Spanish-American War in 1898. The most famous ship of this class was the USS Concord, which was part of Commodore George Dewey's squadron during the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898.

These gunboats, due to their strong armament for their class and decent speed, were well-suited for secondary roles in battle, such as controlling areas, scoring points in skirmishes, capturing islands, or repelling attacks from smaller vessels like torpedo boats or destroyers, for which they posed a deadly threat.
