The three Charlemagne-class battleships, built in the second half of the 1890s at shipyards in Brest and Lorient, marked a major shift in the approach to designing French battleships. Instead of mounting four main guns in single turrets placed in four different positions, it was decided to install four 305 mm guns in two turrets – one forward and one aft.

Their firepower was supplemented by ten 138 mm guns, eight 100 mm guns, and twenty 47 mm guns. Other principles of French battleship design were retained, including the characteristic tumblehome hull. This resulted from the relatively small displacement with which French battleships of that period were designed. Despite certain limitations, the ships possessed respectable armour and could reach a speed of 18 knots.

All three ships took part in the First World War, including the Gallipoli campaign. Gaulois was sunk by a German submarine, while the remaining two vessels were scrapped in the interwar period.

Their strong armament and good speed, combined with reasonable armour, make them a threat to any enemy heavy ship, especially armoured cruisers and older battleships. At the same time, they are among the most beautiful battleships in the game.
