Type 295, officially designated as the 38-metre torpedo boat of the 1903 batch, was built during the tenure of Camille Pelletan as Minister of the French Navy – the last supporter of the Jeune École (Young School) to hold this office. His time in office resulted in delays in battleship construction and the building of several series of small torpedo boats. One of these series consisted of the vessels numbered from 295 to 317, as well as 368.
The main design objective of these ships was to increase the number of torpedoes carried compared to earlier torpedo boats. As a result, the Type 295 carried as many as three torpedo tubes: one mounted in the bow and two mounted near the stern on a rotating mount, which carried two tubes facing in opposite directions. Moreover, these launchers were of 450 mm calibre and were fitted with the new Model 1904 torpedoes, featuring an increased warhead of almost 90 kg (this applied especially to the later vessels of this batch). In addition to the torpedo armament, the ships were armed with two 37 mm guns.
The design was produced by the Normand shipyard, which specialised in vessels of this type.
Their machinery allowed them to reach a speed of 26 knots.
Thanks to their more modern torpedoes, ships of this type will be a valuable addition to the French fleet and may even expand the circle of supporters of the Jeune École.
