The Kasagi-class protected cruisers were built to Japanese order in the United States, with the launching of Chitose even filmed by a team from Thomas Edison. The order for both cruisers was made possible thanks to the war reparations Japan received after its victory in the war with China.

Both vessels were a very faithful replica (with minor modifications) of the earlier-built Takasago cruiser, which was constructed in the United Kingdom (at the Armstrong Elswick shipyard). They differed in speed and displacement.

In many respects, Takasago and the Kasagi class were typical examples of ships known as "Elswick-class cruisers"—named after the town where Armstrong's shipyard was located. The concept for such ships was created by British designer George Wightwick Rendel. The set thus includes two cards, one representing Kasagi, and the other Takasago.

The main armament consisted of two 203 mm guns, ten 120 mm guns, twelve 12-pounder guns, and six 3-pounder guns, along with five torpedo launchers. Kasagi could reach a speed of just over 22 knots, while Takasago exceeded 23 knots. Both types of ships were protected by sloped armoured deck, which distinguished protected cruisers (as opposed to armoured cruisers, which additionally had an armour belt on the sides). Kasagi was slightly larger, with a displacement of around 5000 tons, while Takasago displaced only 4200 tons.

Both vessels not only have a beautiful and fascinating silhouette, but they would also be valuable additions to the Japanese fleet, which needed fast, well-armed, but moderately armoured cruisers (making them more affordable), capable of engaging smaller enemy units or quickly reaching their assigned targets.

The models in the set are resin, 3D printed and can be damaged if not handled properly. All models are unpainted. Glue and paints are not included. Contains small parts and is not intended for use by children under 14 years of age.
